I can't remember under what circumstances I picked up Playing by Old and New Dreams except that it was in the last 2 years and I slept on it until recently. The group consists of Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell, all former Ornette Coleman associates, recorded live in Austria, June 1980. Been enjoying the hell out of this one for a month or two now, especially "Mopti."

To Rococo Rot have a new album out. I've not heard it yet, but based on what I've read from some like-minded folks, I may have to break my To Rococo drought. It was recorded at Faust's studio in the south German countryside with input from Faust's Hans-Joachim Irmler. Hard to resist. In the meantime, here's what is still my favorite TRR tune, from 1997's Paris 25 ep. It's one of those right time right place tunes for me, one that really changed how I listen to and make music, and it still holds up for me more than a decade later.

It's available for order now at Juno Records, and the other fine shops where you do your record ordering should have it by next week. In the U.S., I've had luck ordering I'm A Cliche stuff from Downtown304.com, so check there in the next days. I've been told a digital release is forthcoming as well. I'll let you know when I know the timeline on that.

The promo has already gotten some great feedback from people whose music I've loved over the last several years, so I already feel like it's a huge personal success. World domination must surely follow! Whatever the result, I'm hugely thankful to Cosmo Vitelli and I'm A Cliché for taking a chance on a nobody from Arkansas. I hope I have more chances in the future to put stuff out there.

Speicher 14, a split between Michael Mayer and The Orb, was one of the first in the Kompakt Extra series I bought. The first time I played Mayer's side, "X," I played it at 33 and it sounded so good that I left it alone and I still prefer it slow. Sorry, Michael, but I think that at slo-mo speed it gives it space and brings out the little crunchy bits that keep a body poppin'.

it was a very good year. job's been great. bought a home thanks to a generous gov. tax credit. heard tons of great music and made a bunch myself. i even signed my first record contract (hopefully not my last) with a real life label! it'll be a 4 track vinyl ep plus some digital bonuses and it should be ready for consumption very early in the new year. more on this as the time approaches.

i'll leave the blog for the year with one from stan kenton on his 1966 record plays for today. a bit obvious, yes, but his take on this never gets old for me. see ya next year!

dutch pop band teach-in, like a lot of europop from the era, probably eluded capture here in the u.s. it's a shame. it's some wild shit! a lot of it is crying for a good edit*, though. take "greenpeace." perfect example. nice and funky slow groove complete with orchestral swells and beach sounds. of course the tune gets cringe-inducingly literal ("oh. 'greenpeace.' i get it," you'll say.) as it goes, and that chorus goes places you really wish it wouldn't, and that poor (dutch)man's joe cocker strikes out on his own there, and...well. yow. but cut out that shit and you've got yourself a tune that just missed making the quiet village cut. so it goes for most of these tunes, but there's plenty of good sounds happening.

*i'm currently working up a crydamoure style ripping** edit meself, so back off "the robot"!

was in fayetteville a couple of weekends ago and my friend alannah had acquired a big stack of records, mostly of the late 70s to early 80s euro disco variety. naturally she thought of me! as she doesn't have a turntable any more, she let me pick through and take what i wanted. i was so excited. and i'll be sharing some of the gems from that score here over time. so let's start with a handful today.

first up, two tracks from kongas' africanism album. great cover plus "a cerrone production" sold me. get yourself a drink and get ready for their 15 minutes-plus cover of "gimme some lovin." and is it just me, or does the opening of "tattoo woman" sound remarkably like the opening of abc's "the look of love"?

the french original of this american version—on the mighty casablanca—of patrick juvet's tune is "ou sont les femmes?" curious. i've wondered if he changed it so as not to offend our delicate american sensibilities. or maybe "where are the women" just doesn't flow off the tongue as nicely as "where is my woman." whatever the reason, it's a nice slice of disco pop with great, moody chord changes and some nice soaring, reverbed falsetto. hint: staring at pictures of the guy really enhances the tunes. yeah, that's an ice skate on his shoulder.
